As well as a being photo studio providing a cosy space for portrait shoots, product and still life photography, we run our design business from here and finally have space for some lo-fi relief printmaking, including a small Adana letterpress and a rack of lead type. We’re excited about getting grubby fingers but we also have an A3+ photo printer to have full control over printing our photographs, books and posters (soon to be available in our own online shop).

“Hypnograph is a series of images of all of the different places Anna slept overnight from 2005 until the beginning of 2010. This is a project with strict rules. All pictures of beds are taken the morning after being slept in, using only ambient light, available cameras and where possible from a similar viewpoint.”

We’re proud to announce that Twiss Drinks have just launched their new brand, with identity and packaging designed by Ambigraph. It’s been exciting to be involved in a new brand from the start and now to see the packaging in people’s hands. There’s been great feedback so far and you should start seeing the products in the shops anytime now.

Our intention was to create an identity that conveys the freshness of the brand and the fact that they’re doing something different in a crowded market. We did that partly by creating a hand-lettered logotype, flavour names and strapline. The packaging aims to convey the flavours primarily using colour, with the ‘twist’ flavour cutting into the main colour, much like it does when you taste the drink.

We wish them every success in getting Twiss off the ground and are excited to be along for the ride!

At Ambigraph we have a strong affinity for Thomas Struth’s work. Having been to his current exhibition at the Whitechapel Gallery, we’ve realised how much his approach for the Paradise series resonates with our thinking behind The Withdrawing Room project.

Some words from Struth about the Paradise images:

“I am very fascinated with complex structures and depth of vision and detail. The jungle pictures have no immediate history of reference, so you must surrender your usual faculties and analytical tools and surrender to just looking. There is nothing to think about too much, so the act of looking becomes more meditative.

They present a kind of empty space: emptied to elicit a moment of stillness and internal dialogue. You have to be able to enjoy this silence in order to communicate with yourself–and eventually with others.“

Not only does this convey a lot of similar thinking that led us to create The Withdrawing Room, it also reminds us of one of our favorite pieces of literature/film Solaris, where the intelligent ocean planet that is too large for humans to understand as a single lifeform, allows those close to it a deeper, and often darker, understanding of themselves. There’s also a visual similarity to the lush and serene opening scene’s of Tarkovsky’s film of Solaris.

Welcome to our final Dermagraph calendar of the month. This has been a very enjoyable project through which we are honoured to have worked with many wonderful models.

For this final month we have decided to revisit Mistress Jezabel as there were too many great pictures from her shoot to choose just one. She was the most heavily tattooed model we photographed, one of the most interesting and fun to work with and really embodied the spirit of the project. We are grateful that she found the time to model for us in her busy diary of international domination and postgraduate studies. As our year of tattooed women starts to draw to a close, our penultimate inked lady is Miss Ruby Fortune. Based in London, Ruby is a burlesque performer, singer in a rockabilly band (The Drowning Sorrows) and currently models for Limb Clothing, amongst others. The Withdrawing Room is a new project from Ambigraph. Taking the form of weekly photo blog, it delivers a series of images from the Ambigraph vaults.

Based on the sixteenth century term, The Withdrawing Room aims to create a space to withdraw from the daily bombardment of directed information we receive, to a more ambiguous space where it is left to the participant to immerse themselves in the internal rhythm of what is being revealed and to absorb what is happening in their own time, in their own way. Explanation is kept to the bare minimum aside from this loose guideline.
